Give Your Dining Room A Makeover

Submitted by: Steve B Johnson

Dining rooms should be a natural extension of the rest of your home and create the ideal setting for your meals. Without a doubt, the first thing to change or makeover in a dining room is the all-important dining table. It is natural to feel slightly overwhelmed when shopping for such a major piece of furniture for your home. After all the dining table should ideally see you through all sorts of situations from casual family dinners to formal parties with all the bells and whistles. Choosing the correct dining table requires a proper understanding of space and some long-term planning as well.

Before you go shopping or start scouring the Internet for dining room furniture deals, you need to make some decisions. Are you looking for a formal or informal dining table? Do you prefer wood or metal? Is the rest of your decor modern or traditional? You also need to plan for how many people are going to be using the dining table both minimum and maximum. Would an extendable table with leaves that open and close make more use of your space? What about the shape of your table? Round tables add dimension and space to a room and encourage conversation. According to the rules of Feng Shui round tables also signify heavenly blessing. That is not to say square or rectangular tables are not on trend. If you have a large family or prefer sit down meals for your parties, square or rectangular tables are the norm.

Remember, table settings take space keep at least 24-inches for each place setting per person to avoid bumping elbows and a cramped dining experience. Ideally 10-inches of free space at the center of the table will also allow you to showcase your dishes in style. In case you prefer to serve your meals buffet style, a nearby sideboard or buffet table can be very useful. A sideboard also provides you with space to store your table linens and flatware. If you can manage it, invest in a china cabinet or hutch as another focal point in your dining room. This makes a delightful showcase of your chinaware and other culinary curios and with the help of a little extra lighting can make for a beautiful display piece.

Next on the list are chairs. Dining chairs should slide underneath a table comfortably. You can opt for chairs with armrests or ones without but just make sure the chairs have a good seating pad and adequate backrest. After all, you don t want your guests to be dying to leave the table do you? Dining table chairs can be matching or if you want to be eclectic can be purposely mismatched. However, if you do choose to go the bohemian way, try and have at least one design element similar such as matching upholstery on all the chairs to give the room an all over theme and cohesion. Lighting can make or break a dining room as well. Think of a lighting centerpiece over the dining table but make sure you fit it with a dimmer so that you can fine-tune the ambiance of the room.

Mark these off your dining room makeover to-do list one at a time and you will soon have the dining room of your dreams!
