Do Public Speaking To Promote Your Business and Write Your Book

You need to have published a book. It establishes you as an expert, a guru, a go-to guy or go-to gal. Life is easier for go-to guys and gals– customers seek them out. And if someone actually buys the book, all the better.

You can get books out of transcripts of your speeches. If you are doing business locally, you should be giving talks at organizations like Rotary and Optimist clubs. These clubs meet every week, and they need a speaker for every meeting. Just imagine the pressure on the program chair. Make yourself available. Explain something within your field of expertise. If you are in tax advice, you can explain the new tax laws and the implications. If you are a house painter, you can give criteria for choosing a house painter — you naturally will meet those criteria yourself. By standing up in front of the room speaking, you establish your yourself as a leader. By giving them useful advice abundantly, you show that you’re concerned for them. You show that you’re knowledgeable. When they want the job done right, they will think of you, and they will come to you. You don’t have to hustle for clients as much when you’ve established yourself as an expert. If you want to speak in the Denver/Boulder area, get the databases from Joe Sabah. He gives a course on How To Speak For Fun And Profit, and he includes databases of organizations needing speakers — one database for the civic organizations that don’t pay you anything except to buy you a meal and one database for organizations that do pay for speakers. Record your speeches. Olympus produces some very nice voice recorders. You might want to splurge and get a lavalier microphone to clip to your collar. Have the recordings transcribed. You can get transcriptions done by native English speakers somewhere else in the world for a quite modest amount of money. You can get in touch with them over the Web, for example through elance.com. Of course you don’t have to give speeches. You could just dictate what you want transcribed. Get a headset, plug it into your computer, dictate, send that file off, but getting it while promoting your business is more efficient. Or you can have the computer do the transcription. I use Dragon Systems NaturallySpeaking. It does quite a decent job of transcription — at least if you have the newest version of NaturallySpeaking Preferred, you have a really good headset, and you don’t have much noise in the background. It even does a reasonable job on recordings you drag into it. Writing your book does not have to be painful. It can be a by-product of promoting your business.
